The .tel plug-in for Microsoft Outlook® application enables you to extend your Contacts with .tel data. With this plug-in, you can:

After installing the plug-in, you will see a new toolbar in your Outlook interface, with ".tel actions" with all your controls, a search field, and a button for logging into TelFriends to see friend request messages.

Note: when you first run Outlook after installing this plug-in, it will ask you to log into the TelFriends account. If you don't have an account in TelFriends, skip this step; you will still be able to use the plug-in. To sign up for a free TelFriends account, go to http://telfriends.tel.

View .tel domains

To view a .tel domain, type in the domain name in the search field, and press Enter. The system shows the .tel contacts in a new window. You can click any contact, and the plug-in will launch the application assigned to this type of contact in your Preferences; for example, clicking a Skype ID will launch your Skype application by default. If you want the system to start a different application, please configure Outlook launchers.

Save .tel data to Contacts

You can save a .tel to your Outlook contacts. For that:

  1. Choose whether you want to save the .tel:
    1. To a new contact. Enter the name and (optionally) company of the contact.
    2. To an existing account. Choose the contact from the list.
  2. Map .tel contact items to Contact fields.
    1. To import a contact item, select the field from the drop-down menu.
    2. To skip a contact item, choose Do not import.
  3. Click Import when you're done.
  4. Complete the operation by clicking Save and close. To stop the import without saving, click Close. To view the contact, click Return to .tel.

Update your Contacts with .tel data

After saving a .tel to a Contact in Outlook, you can always see that .tel and keep the contact data synchronized with it. To update your Contacts, go .tel Actions > Refresh .tel Contacts. The system will check whether any .tels have been updated since you saved the contact items locally, and will offer to view the .tel or the contact item, if any differences are found.

To import new contact items from a .tel, click View and save the new data to your existing contact.

Contacts and .tel

If you do not know which .tel a given contact uses, go to Contacts in Outlook, open the contact and switch to the Add-ins tab. You will see .tel Contacts with the .tel domain name, and the "friending” status, which indicates whether the domain may have private data for you:

To add a different domain to this contact, click Edit, type in the new .tel domain name, and click Save.

Log into TelFriends

When you first start your .tel plug-in for Outlook, it requests that you login to TelFriends. If you don't want to login immediately, or have no TelFriends account, skip this step.

To login later, go to .tel Actions > Preferences > TelFriends ID. You can save your username and password, and choose to login at startup automatically. This way, the plug-in will log you into TelFriends automatically every time Outlook starts, and you will be able to see any pending friend requests.

Add .tel Domains

Here you can configure the domains that you own, so that you can check for friend requests and switch the profiles of your domains. If you don't have .tel domains, go to .tel Actions > Buy a .tel to see a list of companies that sell .tel domains.

Switch Profiles

If you have setup profiles in your .tel control panel, you can switch between them in your Outlook plug-in. With this option, you don't need to log into your .tel control panel to update the set of contact data that is published on the Web.

Configure Outlook Launchers

You can choose which application is launched when you click certain .tel contact items; for example, you can configure Outlook to launch your preferred internet browser to open web links in .tel domains.

Go to .tel Actions > Launchers to see the current settings. When you start, the plug-in uses system default settings. If you install new applications, click Check Availability to add them to the list of available launchers in Outlook. If an application you want to use does not show up in the list, click Add a Launcher and navigate to the folder of that application on your system.

Configure the .tel Plug-in

Your preferences also allow you to enable the .tel plug-in to search for updates automatically, and to set the frequency for these version checks. If an update is available, you will be taken to the download website, where you can download and install the new version of the plug-in.
