Kiax Softphone
Kiax is an open-source softphone that you can use with an Asterisk PBX (Private Branch Exchange, that is, a private telephone network) to place calls over the Internet (VoIP). The softphone uses the Qt GUI toolkit for the user interface and the IAXclient library as its base for communication with Asterisk PBX. Kiax can be compiled and used on the three most popular platforms: Windows OS, Linux OS, and Mac OS X.
With version 2.1, Kiax introduces basic .tel functionality.
How to use .tel in Kiax
- Type in the .tel domain you're willing to call in the search box or the dial box, and a dialog box will pop up with all phone numbers published in that .tel domain. You can dial any number from directly from the popup box.
- Save a contact with a .tel domain name as an extension number. When you click on a contact to dial, the .tel dialog will appear, from which you can choose the number that you want to dial.
Kiax uses the open-source library ldns for DNS queries by embedding a small library of functions called dottelutils. You can use it separately from the source code. If you want to learn how Kiax implements .tel functionality using dottelutils, please see the tutorial on using dottelutils.
More information about Kiax and its development can be found on the download page or the project website.
Please feel free to give feedback - comment, suggest or give ideas related to the softphone and the .tel integration.
